“My Favourite Album,” “Monk,” “Angel” and “Buffy.”

December 3rd, 2006

G’day everyone! This is the first of what I hope to be a regular rambling about what I’m watching at the moment. These posts will cover things that I don’t get to talk about during our Podcasts. They will be my immediate and spontaneous thoughts to what I’ve just watched on TV.

Anyway, tonight I was rather bored and started channel surfing. “Monk” was on Southern Cross and “My Favourite Album” was on ABC. I kinda like Monk but don’t religiously watch it. Tonight’s episode was a Halloween special. I would have expected Monk to be a lot more freaked out by Halloween than he seems to be. *shrug*

During the ads in Monk I was switching to the ABC to watch My Favourite Album. This was a countdown of the top ten albums as voted by ABC viewers. Now, I’m not much of a music buff. Movies and TV are more my thing. It was kind of interesting to see what Australians (or, more accurately, viewers of the ABC that could be bothered to vote. These sorts of things are always SERIOUSLY skewed.) thought were their favourite albums. I won’t bore you with the list and, frankly, the round table discussion after each entry was rather lame. If you’re interested I’m sure you can find it online somewhere.

The pure and simple fact was that I couldn’t take my eyes off Myf Warhurst’s stupendous and impressive cleavage! They were really out there! By the end of the show I didn’t care what the number one album was. I didn’t care what the panel had to say. All I cared about was getting another look at Myf’s cavernous cleavage. Good one Myf! Thank you ABC!
After all that excitement I needed to cool off so I popped on the next episode of Angel. I’ve gradually been working my way through both Buffy and Angel. I never managed to see them when they were on TV so I’m making up for it now. I’m up to Season 3, Episode 6 entitled “Billy.” This was a continuation of the story about the person that Angel freed from a Hell dimension in order to save Cordelia. This person turns out to be evil (big surprise!) and makes men go crazy and misogynistic and start beating up on any women near them. It was an interesting episode because:

  • Cordelia is training to actually do some fighting. Finally! For two and a bit seasons she’s just been standing around in the background while the men do the fighting. Hopefully we’ll see her kick some ass in future episodes.
  • Fred seems to be coming out of her shell. This is good. She’s an interesting character but has been let down so far by having to act crazy all the time.
  • Wesley got to be evil. I was so waiting for a joke about “The Shining” when he was running around the hotel with an axe and chopping down the door. Alas, not even a “HERE’S WESLEY!”
  • They didn’t draw out the whole Billy arc for the whole season. He makes an appearance in one episode and gets killed a few episodes later.

The writing in Angel has certainly improved. The first season was a little dodgy but the second season was great. Hopefully the third season will be able to keep the momentum.
Now, after Angel I had a treat. I watched Buffy Season 6, Episode 7 entitled “Once More, With Feeling.” Possibly the most talked about episode ever. Even I had heard of it and I wasn’t a fan at the time! If you haven’t heard of it (what planet have you been living on?) it’s the one where a spell is cast of everyone and they all break into song and dance. I can only imagine what it was like for fans who had no forewarning of what was going to happen. They must have freaked out when the first song started!

This episode was great! I’m not a fan of musicals normally but since this was really taking the piss out of musicals it was acceptable. :-) Things that I liked about this episode:

  • A lot of secrets were revealed. Buffy tells everyone that they pulled her out of Heaven. Tara finds out that Willow has been using a memory/mind control spell on her to make her forget their fights. Xander and Anya expressed their misgivings and worries about getting married. And Giles realises that he must leave in order for Buffy to start taking responsibility. Willow is gonna cop it big time! The guilt about bringing Buffy back and what will probably be a relationship ending fight with Tara. It should be good!
  • This singing was pretty good. As far as I could tell everyone was singing their own stuff and they could all hold a tune.
  • Sorry, I just have to say again how much I love the fact that this episode will create so many repercussions in future episodes. :)

I knew it would be hard to top the amazing Season 5 but they’re having a pretty good try!

Next up, more Buffy and Angel, Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis.
